About Manitoba

Manitoba is a dynamic, growing province, proud of our cultural diversity, high standard of living and economic opportunities available,. Manitobans of every heritage, working together, have built a thriving and prosperous community that continues to attract new immigrants from around the world every year.

From the earliest days of settlement immigration has played a strong role in the development of Manitoba. Today, immigration remains an important part of our province's creative strategies for maintaining a competitive edge in the global markets of tomorrow.

Cost of Living

The cost of living in Manitoba is one of the lowest in Canada. Factors such as a strong economy, good employment opportunities, favorable tax rates, a large local agriculture industry and abundant natural resources help maintain our high standard of living. Our abundant hydroelectric power, for example, means that Manitobans enjoy some of the lowest electricity costs in the world.

Manitobans also enjoy a stable real estate market that does not suffer the severe fluctuations often seen in other communities across North America. This means that affordable housing is available for sale or rent, usually at prices substantially lower than in other provinces.

Accommodations

Manitoba's housing market continually grows and develops. Buyers and renters can find a wide selection of accommodations at affordable prices.

Manitoba's stable economy usually helps our real estate market avoid the rapid price fluctuations experienced in other communities across North America. People of all ages and incomes can consider home ownership as an option

Arts & Culture

Manitoba is home to an exciting and active arts and cultural community. Manitobans celebrate life on the prairies through the performing arts, visual arts, festivals, sports and many other pursuits.

Many of our performing arts organizations have earned impressive international reputations and many world-class artists, actors, musicians and performers have come from Manitoba. In addition, Manitoba is home to several world famous museums, a major art gallery and many prominent art and historic collections enjoyed by thousands of visitors annually.

Each year, Manitoba is proud to host more than 100 festivals that celebrate our cultural and ethnic diversity, musical achievement, performing and visual arts, the great outdoors and many other aspects of life in Manitoba

Economy

Many factors contribute to Manitoba's strong, stable and diverse economy. Our solid foundation as a distribution and manufacturing centre, vast natural resources, low business costs, strategic geographical location , and a highly skilled workforce have made Manitoba an attractive place for local and international businesses to operate.

From the development of new opportunities in the emerging global marketplace to the advancement of established sectors such as small business, agriculture, aerospace, garment trades, manufacturing and high technology health care, Manitobans are proving their ability to compete, not only in the Canadian, but in the global marketplace every day Employment

Manitoba's stable economy and skilled work force ensures a relatively high rate of employment. Many Manitoba industries have experienced dynamic growth over the past several years, thus creating many new jobs.

Traditional sectors such as mining, manufacturing, technology, agriculture, tourism, transportation and forestry employ thousands of Manitobans. However, new sectors such as aerospace, health care products, information and telecommunications, agri-food production and environmental industries are experiencing rapid growth, expanding employment opportunities for thousands more Manitobans each year.

For those who are seeking employment, both the federal and provincial government offices offer assistance

Industry

Manitoba industry is a multi-faceted component of our provincial economy and growth. The diversity of this expanding industrial sector is reflected in the wide array of businesses found in Manitoba. These include air, road and rail transportation; tourism; forestry; highly technological industries such as aerospace, health, information technology and sustainable development research; film, video and sound production; agriculture, agri-food and agriculturally-related products; manufacturing; computers and metal fabrication, to mention a few.

Leisure and Recreation

Local recreational facilities and programs greatly enhance the quality of life in Manitoba communities throughout the year.

Any activities, from watching or participating in sporting events to going to the theatre, add to our quality of life, promote individual physical and mental health, strengthen the community and often contribute to the local economy.

Professional / Trade Assessment

Manitoba assists immigrants in entering the province's workforce through a variety of programs. While the provincial government is not an employment agency, it does provide valuable services to immigrants, such as evaluating credentials obtained outside of Canada against Manitoba standards; providing Canadian work experience opportunities, providing English as a Second Language classes and distributing information on Manitoba professional and trade standards, education and training programs to prospective immigrants.

Climate Weather

Manitoba's climate covers a very broad range of temperatures and weather conditions similar to many other countries in the same latitude around the world. Our winters can be very cold and our summers hot, but often we enjoy moderate seasonal temperatures.

Manitobans enjoy many seasonal activities such as going to the beach in the summer, cross-country skiing in the winter or hiking in the spring and fall.
